Help:How to Import Articles from Wikipedia

From Messianic Judaism Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

This guide is intended to guide users with administrative rights to the wiki though importing content from Wikipedia to Messianic Judaism Wiki. Users without administrator access to the wiki wishing to import content from Wikipedia will have to manually import content. This is an unfortunate necessity in order to preserve the data integrity of Messianic Judaism Wiki. Misuse of the automated import mechanism (intentional, or otherwise) could overwrite large sections of this wiki and thereby damage it. If you have something you want to import from Wikipedia and a manual import is not practical, please contact an administrator and we’ll see what we can do.

Step By Step Exporting From Wikipedia

  • Navigate to the Wikipedia page that you wish to import into Messianic Judaism Wiki. For purposes of example, we’ll use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeshua_(name) as the article we wish to import into Messianic Judaism Wiki.
  • Once you know what you want to export, paste the URL into a text editor for handy reference.
  • On Wikipedia, navigate to the toolbox area and look for the “special pages” link and click on it. Once the Special:SpecialPages Wikipedia page, click on the “Export pages” link.

  • Once on the Special:Export page of Wikipedia, copy the address you pasted into the text editor window earlier into the large unlabeled text box below the “add pages from category” field.
    • Make sure “include only the current version, not the full history” and “save as file” are checked.
    • Make sure that “include templates” is not checked! Importing templates from Wikipedia to Messianic Judaism Wiki in automated manner can cause serious damage to the site!
Wikipedia's export page
  • Click the Export Button.
  • You’ll be prompted to save a file beginning with “Wikipedia-” and having a file extension of .xml, save the file to a location you can easily locate such as your “Downloads” folder or your Desktop.

Messianic Judaism Wiki's Import Page
  • Next navigate to the newly created page. In this case, the correct page would be http://en.messianicjudaismwiki.com/wiki/Yeshua_(name) but yours will be different. The newly imported page will always have the same name it did on Wikipedia once it has been imported.
  • Once the page is imported, and you’ve navigated to the new page to confirm that it has been uploaded as epected, the first thing you must do is insert the Wikipedia Attribution template. The template should look like this: {{Wikipedia Attribution|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeshua_(name)}} with the URL of the original article passed as a parameter to the template. Adding the attribution template is extremely important, without it Messianic Judaism Wiki is violating the Creative Commons license under which Wikipedia’s content is licensed.

  • Next, if the page needs to be renamed to conform with Messianic Judaism Wiki’s standards, often to make sure that proper capitalization is used in the article title, do so now. Recall that, as a rule, the first letter of every word in an article title is capitalized unless there is good reason not to do so.
